Abstract

This study uses nationally representative micro-panel data from the China Household Finance Survey (CHFS) and employs an Intensity DID approach to evaluate the impact of China’s 2016 agricultural subsidy reform on rural household farm labor supply. Following the reform, the number of household members aged 16–65 whose primary occupation was farming increased in areas with a higher agricultural share. The estimated effect is statistically significant among households with more educated household heads and those in non-major grain-producing regions.
