A Case Study of Cultural Identity of Students at a Private University

Abstract

This study examines the cultural identity of college students of Guangzhou Institute, focusing on their identification with Chinese and Western cultures from three dimensions: language, values and cultural behaviors. Results show that students have a stronger Chinese cultural identity than Western cultural identity. Among three dimensions, students’ identification with cultural values rank lowest. The study also finds that exposure to Western culture enhances rather than diminishes Chinese cultural identity. Lastly, senior students exhibit significant changes in Western cultural identity, reflecting a need for improved value education in later college years.
