Abstract

This paper examines the challenges faced by upper-intermediate English learners when reading texts, emphasizing difficulties in language knowledge that can disrupt comprehension. It provides a detailed analysis of the impact of understanding polysemy and idioms on cognition and briefly discusses the influence of L1 on pronunciation. The paper suggests that improving pragmatic competence and developing a greater awareness of pragmatics are key to understanding intended meanings. Overall, it concludes that mastering all aspects of language is essential for students to enhance their language skills.
