The Cultural Approaches to the Overseas Dissemination of Chinese Micro-dramas

Abstract

As an emerging audiovisual form, Chinese micro-short dramas are actively expanding into international markets and participating in global cultural circulation. Stuart Hall’s theory of articulation provides a theoretical framework for understanding the interaction and circulation of cultural elements embedded in micro-short dramas across different cultural contexts. From the perspectives of aesthetic commonality, emotional interaction, and cultural articulation, this study systematically examines the current practices, characteristics, and limitations of Chinese micro-short dramas in their engagement with global culture. At present, the overseas dissemination of micro-short dramas is confronted with challenges such as severe content homogenization, the superficialization of narrative meaning, and insufficient institutional and industrial support. In future development, greater emphasis should be placed on the deep integration of Chinese cultural elements into narrative structures, the introduction of multidimensional content evaluation mechanisms, and the improvement of legal frameworks and industrial chains, so as to gradually strengthen stable articulations among diverse cultural elements and explore more sustainable pathways for the international dissemination of Chinese culture.
