Abstract

In China, the Internet penetration rate is close to 80%, and college students' time spent on the Internet has become a rising trend. Based on the questionnaire data of undergraduates majoring in finance in Chinese finance and economics colleges and universities, this paper investigates whether the time spent on the Internet improves or reduces the academic performance of college students majoring in finance. The results of the study show that, in general, the time spent on the Internet by college students reduces their academic performance and negatively affects the improvement of students' learning ability; the mediation effect test finds that adjusting the time spent by college students on the Internet for non-study purposes plays an intermediary role in the above relationship, which indicates that the time spent on the Internet affects college student's academic performance through the time spent on the Internet for non-study purposes. Further analysis found that the negative correlation between the duration of Internet access and college student's academic performance is mainly reflected in the group of college students who have not passed the CET4 and CET6.
