This paper provides a comprehensive review of the research progress on the overload phenomenon during projectile penetration, systematically analyzing the topic from four aspects: theoretical research, simulation technology, experimental testing, and propagation laws. In the theoretical research section, the physical mechanisms and changing patterns of different materials during high-speed penetration are explored. The simulation technology section focuses on the advancements in numerical simulations that enhance the ability to replicate complex physical phenomena during penetration. The experimental testing section summarizes the work scholars have done on projectile load storage testing apparatus, including the design of testing systems, protective device design, and subsequent test data processing. The propagation laws section introduces the relationship between penetration overload and various factors based on previous studies and points out problems that urgently need to be addressed in penetration overload research.
