Abstract

Corn starch is regarded as one of the most promising negative electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries, given its abundance, low cost and environmentally friendly composition. Nevertheless, the utilization of hard carbon anodes derived from biomass materials is constrained by the restricted capacity and low initial coulombic efficiency. In this study, corn starch was combined with varying quantities of citric acid and subjected to a series of pre-oxidation and calcination treatments with the objective of enhancing the agglomeration and foaming properties of the corn starch. The resulting batteries exhibit a high capacity and a markedly high first coulombic efficiency. The findings of this study may provide new ideas and methods for the design of sodium-ion batteries using corn starch as a precursor.
