Abstract

The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China pointed out that to “tell Chinese stories well, spread the voice of China well”, and comprehensively promote the ideological and political construction of the curriculum are the key measures for foreign language and literature majors to answer the question of the times “to build a strong country, what can foreign language learners do”, among which cross-cultural awareness is particularly important. Based on Baker’s framework of intercultural awareness, this study takes English majors of Southwest University as the research objects, adopts a hybrid design method combining quantitative and qualitative methods, that is, through questionnaire survey, classroom observation, teacher-student interviews and other methods, and takes the textbook Understanding Contemporary China: A Reading and Writing Course as an example. It focuses on how English reading and writing course can effectively improve students’ intercultural awareness. Through analyzing the results, it is concluded that the course is of great help to students’ intercultural awareness. The development of this course is helpful for students to expand cultural knowledge, improve intercultural awareness and ability, and promote the implementation of the fundamental task of moral cultivation, improve the effectiveness of education and the core competitiveness.
