Abstract

This paper reviews the history and current status of second language vocabulary acquisition research, tracing its advancement from a marginal position to its current prominence. It explores the evolution of theoretical frameworks of vocabulary, revealing a trend towards greater diversification and depth in theory development, research methodologies, and educational investigations. Spanning receptive and productive vocabulary size, depth of vocabulary knowledge, and the mental lexicon, it discusses the progression of the debate over the nature of vocabulary as knowledge or competence, binary or continuous. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of rigorous measurement of vocabulary, critically analyzing widely-used tools such as Vocabulary Levels Test, Vocabulary Size Test, Vocabulary Knowledge Scale, and Word Association Test. By focusing on common misconceptions and misuses of these tools, the paper aims to offer insights for future research and pedagogical practices in second language vocabulary acquisition.
